The Chrome Depot keeps students running

The Chrome Depot, located in room 116, is the technology haven that offers services for Chromebooks.
The Chrome Depot was a very busy place at the beginning of the school year when CHS first received over 2,000 Chromebooks.
“The first week of school we had around 60 kids per day stopping by,” said Josh Hartle the Network Tech. “Now, we are seeing around 20 kids per day.”
Most students who visit the Depot have charging issues or broken screens.
Any broken screen, keyboard, or charger is free the first time it is broken. However, after the first time, there will be charges. After receiving a replacement for free the first time, broken parts will cost the student.
“A broken screen is $50, a keyboard and charger is $25 and if the Chromebook is completely broken, it is $200,” said Hartle.
If a Chromebook doesn’t turn on (and the problem was not the fault of a student) it will be sent back to the company. Students are encouraged to label their Chromebooks. Mr. Hartle suggested using a label maker.
Junior Zoe Recklein has been to the Chrome Depot twice. She was given a new Chromebook for free when hers was broken.
Recklein said, “The rules are very strict, you must sign in and wait for your name to be called.”
Luke Wikoff and Alondra Munoz, two freshmen who had went to the Chrome Depot, found it very helpful. Munoz’s cursor had not been working and Wikoff could not log into Skyward.
The Chrome Depot was previously a computer lab; the old computers were given to the middle school to replace their computers. Our school is home to all the servers in the district, having 12 in total. Most schools in our district only have one server.
The Depot controls what is blocked on our Chromebooks and what is not. They can also see what websites are popular among students.
