For more than sixty years, the Collinsville Woman’s Club has sponsored the contest, recognizing budding, young artists at Collinsville High School.

This year, student art pieces were judged in four categories – beginning art, drawing, painting, and photography.

Twelve Collinsville High School art students were recently named winners of the 2018 Collinsville Woman’s Club Art Contest.

Names of the 2018 winners are:

Beginning Art – black & white:  Jackelin Lopez (1st), Ryleigh Kleeb (2nd), Beginning Art – color:  Aaliyah Bell (1st), Islemy Leyva (2nd),

Drawing: Rocio Romo (1st), Christy Weber (2nd), Sydney Pettit & Reyna Skeel (3rd Tie),

Senior Rocio Romo, who won 1st place in the drawing category, said “I don’t worry about what people may say because everyone interprets artwork differently. If my artwork is judged harshly I know that I can improve on it and make it better. Taking criticism and turning it into hard work for improvement and I know they judge artwork harshly because many great artworks are received and viewed and there can only be a couple of winners. Many of the judges are very nice like the women from the Collinsville Women’s Club. I enjoyed being able to participate this year and hope that I can do so next year as well.”

Painting: Rachel Harrison (1st), Alexis Chavez (2nd), and Photography: Amanda Gomez (1st), Hannah Asbeck (2nd).

“Personally, I really appreciate feedback on my work so I like competitions” said 1st place winner Rachel Harrison. “I might lose, but at least I now know what things I can improve about my art. The ladies at the women’s club really have a good eye for art and I really enjoy participating every year. They are always very welcoming and ask questions about our life and work.”

Winners received certificates, ribbons, and cash prizes.

“We enjoy having these talented, young artists with us,” said Annette Graebe, chair of the club’s Art Committee. “We’re grateful to Rosie Dodson and Emma Houshmand of the Art Department for their dedication and support.”

Additional members of the Art Committee are Gail Cange, Sharon McAley, and Renee Taake with Judy Beasley, Betty Duffy, and Karen Sether assisting with judging.
