The year is 1690, the British had just recently invaded and colonized what became the thirteen colonies, a man named Benjamin Harris would make history by publishing the first bit of American Journalism in Boston. The people who would really kick it off though would be James Franklin and his younger brother Benjamin Franklin who would both found and work for The New England Courant. Benjamin Franklin would later on go to take over the much more popular The Pennsylvania Gazette. There Benjamin Franklin would go on to publish easily one of the most famous papers of all time making it where people would be a lot more willing to go towards the Revolutionary War whilst also posting the first cartoon in an article stating the famous snake with the at the time eight colonies that were on their side and big bold words stating “Join or Die”.
American Journalism throughout history has had so much impact throughout the years, whether that be Thomas Paine’s impact through getting people riled up over the Stamp Act of 1765 or Joseph Pulitzer leaving his mark on the newspaper world. Throughout the years, Journalism has been the number one way to keep the people informed and updated. So here we are in the present day, American Journalism is still very important and is more important now than ever before. There are countless news outlets out there, some that are better at giving information than others, and typically journalists would want to go to the best one. So I made it my mission to find my way into and learn the ways of the most trustable and reliable news outlet there is, The Kahoki. Formerly known as The Chanticleer, making the switch to The Kahoki in 1955, this newspaper has been around since 1926. The Kahoki has been around for ninety nine years making it where next year will be The Kahoki’s 100th birthday. If a news outlet has been around for that long then it has to have some good credit to its name.
The Kahoki is actively ran by Collinsville High School teacher Kristin Westphal who has been running the Kahoki for 20 years. Ms. Westphal has a lot of prior experience in journalism. She has had a summer internship with Centralia Sentinel which is in mid south Illinois. Having that experience and a degree in journalism, she is the perfect person to run such an important newspaper. With The Kahoki turning 100 next year, I think that makes it one of the big dogs of newspapers, up there with The Washington Post and The New York Times.
You can get any information that you want from The Kahoki. Here we cover only the important topics, such as what is going on around the school, if the movie that came out last week is even good, and what the most recent holidays can mean, or if you want to know the truth about energy drinks, then Emma Ramirez has your back, or if you want to know two teenage high school girls professional letterboxd thoughts on media, our Editor in Chief Naomi Hurst and Kaylee Cooper are your people to go to. Here at The Kahoki we have a small group of writers who write what they love and their word is definitely 100% correct and there is no reason to second guess it.
So why stress over what all the other news outlets are saying when you have truthful, caring, and reliable news that’s been here for 99 years. Some people say that American News is in chaos, but my honest opinion is we need to look at the real important things around the world.
