Class Clash

Homecoming Week is one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Aside from the dance itself, the preceding week is full of fun events that are sure to get the students excited. This year was no exception, with Disney-themed dress up days ranging from Sleeping Beauty Day to Mad Hatter Day.

There were a couple of noteworthy events throughout the week as well. On Tuesday, Class Clash took place in the Commons Area. The CHS Staff took the win, but the seniors made things exciting with a close second place finish. Mr. Homecoming was on Wednesday night, where Tyrone Ealy was crowned Mr. Homecoming for his rendition of “Trumpets” by Jason Derulo on the trumpet. Finally, the stands were packed on Friday night as the Collinsville Kahoks triumphed over Mattoon High School with a 43-3 win at the Homecoming football game.

The Homecoming Dance took place on Saturday, after much planning and preparation by the CHS Student Council and its sponsors. The Commons Area was covered in Disney decorations and balloons, and the cookies provided by Mr. Hernandez and his culinary students made for a truly magical evening. The dance was outside this year–a change made the year before due to the pandemic.

When asked about the benefits of having the Homecoming Dance outside, Student Council sponsor Kyle Gordon stated, “I believe the biggest benefit is space. People can spread out. It is also much cooler outside than inside the gym.”

According to Gordon, students can anticipate that the dance will stay outside in years to come. “The junior class is currently working to select the theme and spirit days for next year,” he said, “if you have any ideas, please send me an email.”
