Senior basketball player Talesha Gilmore made history by breaking the record for most career rebounds. The previous record of 880 rebounds was set by Raven Berry in 2009, who plays D1 basketball at SIUE and was recently inducted in their hall of fame.
In her game against Granite City, Lady Kahoks won 58-32. Gilmore’s record achievement was met with an overwhelming mix of emotions as she broke the record and won the game with her teammates.
“It was a rush of feelings and I didn’t know what to say,” said Gilmore. “It was just amazing.”
With the rush of feelings, Gilmore spent her entire high school career playing girl’s basketball as she was inspired by her grandpa and continued playing, making her grandpa proud. Although he was only able to attend one of her games, his influence had a lasting impact on Gilmore’s life and basketball career.
“My grandpa, he was always there to listen and he was so excited to try to come to my games but only came one time sadly but he was always proud of me but he’s not with us anymore but I wouldn’t be who I am today without him.”
Honoring her grandpa’s memory made Gilmore who she is today. She has become a better communicator during the games. Many times, she talks and helps her teammates on defense.
“Talesha has become a much more well-rounded basketball player. She’s always been a great athlete which obviously helps but she has worked really hard the last four years to improve her basketball-specific skills,” said Assistant Coach, Mr.Henson.“We’re all really excited to see how she keeps growing and improving when she goes on to play college basketball at SWIC next year.”
Gilmore’s performance on the field has helped her improve herself and would like to reach a thousand rebounds as she continues playing at Collinsville and at SWIC as she will continue playing once her senior year is over.
